Matching-handle overwrite risk

A product handle identifies a product in Shopify. During import, Shopify offers an overwrite option for products with matching handles. When that option is used, existing values can be replaced for the columns included in the CSV.

Preflight before an update

• Export and retain a backup before starting an import.
• Confirm whether each handle is meant to create a product or update one.
• Review every included column: a blank or stale value can be as consequential as an intended edit.
• Test in an appropriate non-production environment when available, then inspect the import preview.

Catalog Guard does not connect to a store, compare a CSV against live handles, or determine whether an overwrite is safe. It cannot replace a store-level backup and review process.
